Mobile AL Homes for Sale - Things you MUST Look For!

Mobile AL Homes for Sale - Things you MUST Look For!

When you are looking for Mobile AL Homes for Sale, it’s very easy to get all caught up in the moment and overlook some things that might be obvious signs that there are problems in the house you are looking at.  The best thing you can do is try to check your emotions at the door, and look at a home with an open mind, and without any bias.  A veteran Realtor® can be your best ally on your search for Mobile AL Homes for Sale, pointing out potential issues, however, unless they are also a Licensed Home Inspector another set of eyes is absolutely necessary. Forget about the beautiful landscaping and ice cream store down the street.  Pay attention to the home, and watch for some of these potential red flags:

  • Structural Problems – There are a lot of cosmetic issues that can be fixed in a house, but when it comes to the foundation or structural problems, it may be best to just walk away.  Look in the basement for large cracks or bulges in the wall.  The corners of homes can tell the story, expect minor settling to occur in all homes but if a crack runs down from the corner, a Structural Engineer Inspection is a must. If there has been a renovation in the home, ask an inspector to check if any load bearing walls were modified or removed.
  • Musty Smells – If there is water getting into the house, or coming through the foundation, it will only be a matter of time before the structure cracks or buckles.  If you smell a musty smell, there has been a history of water getting places where it shouldn’t.  Mold from water intrusion can invite termites plus be hazardous to your families health.  Move on to the next home on the list.
  • For Sale Signs – You expect to see one or two signs in a neighborhood, but when you see a lot of for sale signs on one street, or nearby businesses that have been boarded up, be careful.  There is probably a reason why people and businesses are moving out, and you want to know that before you buy.
  • Critters – When you are looking at a home, look around for evidence of bug infestations or other critters living in the home.  If a home is for sale, the owner has probably done their best to clean up, but be vigilant in looking for signs of unwanted guests.
